Here's another commission I did for Sans détour éditions, ( www.sans-detour.com ) for an expansion for the french Edition for the Call of Cthulhu tabletop Roleplaying game.
Again, a lot of the new creatures in this book are Lovecraftian riffs on classic mythological creatures from Greek,Celtic and roman mythology, as Marseille (the subject matter of this expansion) has been a meeting point of these three cultures.
In this case, Cernunnos is one of the gods of the Celts, including the gauls. He is traditionally an ambiguous figure of both death and fertility. In the context of the call of cthulhu, he is one of the many appearances of Nyarlatothep. His alien nature is the reason why I did not go for the usual deer antlers.
The structure it sits on is a traditional shed found in the fields of southern France.
